Natural home building and technique

Year of the MUD

Building and putting more into the Timber Frame.

Natural Home

We have a lot to do this year and accomplish. We will be shredding over 5 TONS of straw and harvesting over 1 TON of raw clay. It will be a long process but the end product will be worth it. The goal is to accomplish a living wall system that takes moisture from the air as well as puts clean filtered air back into the home. The walls will also contain seed which will grow and interlock the fibers in the walls. Windows are pre-cut and measured so the packing can be worked around them. Doors, Vents and Lights will all be pre cut and ready to go before hand. The more clay introduced into the straw the more fire resistant the walls will be. We're hoping with over 12" of cavity our insulation value will be close to R-40.

Last year I ended up putting mineral wool into the trusses in the roof space. The roof is insultated at a R value of 30 and has paper inbetween the shiplap and the metal roofing. The trusses were of 10" from secondary to primary.

Straw in our walls, I built a tumbler to speed up the process and with the backhoe running each day it seems to be slowly coming together. As an update, I finished packing the house this year and will be moving towards plumbing and finish work. I was able to install a woodstove I had kicking around and ran some pipe up through the roof. There will be a masonry heater but I was six inches off on my blueprint sooo, I cried one big fat tear and now I'm back at it.... working and forming a 2x6 column which will be solid concrete and rebar to gods green earth. The house is rather huge, with a full basement, full 1st floor and a raised half floor we over estimated the sqft. It's sitting at roughly 3800 which is not what I intended as the older we all get the less space we will need and the more love we have to give =) I am a mad man..though.. so who knows what was right or what was wrong but I'll be happy knowing this was made by my own two hands.. and feet.
